Cliff Jones
Chief Technical Officer

Cliff, a physicist who has worked on liquid crystals and displays for over 22 years, is a co-inventor of the zenithal bistable display technology behind epop and a co-founder of ZBD.

He worked initially for GEC and BDH Chemicals before moving to DERA in 1990. His work on bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal displays led to awards from the Society for Information Display (1992 Sturgeon Award) and the British Liquid Crystal Society (Young Scientist 1994).

From 1994 to 1998 Cliff led the technical work for a major Anglo-Japanese innovation programme between DERA and the Sharp Corporation that successfully demonstrated HDTV using passively addressed, bistable ferroelectric liquid crystals.

In 1997, Cliff was the youngest person to be promoted to Senior Principal Scientific Officer of Individual Merit (latterly DERA Fellow) and became Technical Leader for DERA's Displays Group. In 2000, he received the prestigious Charles Vernon Boys Medal from the Institute of Physics. Since founding ZBD, he has won the Science and Technology category of Ernst and Young’s 'Entrepreneur of the Year' Competition for the Midlands in 2005, and the Cyril Hilsum Medal from the British Liquid Crystals Society in 2007.

Within ZBD, Cliff leads all of the technical work, from material and device physics, display addressing techniques to manufacturing process design. He is also responsible for managing the company's intellectual property portfolio.

Cliff has over 80 publications to his name and holds over 50 granted patents in the field of displays. He is an Honorary QinetiQ Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragements of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
